This update adds support for HE* and HE across all platforms (Windows / macOS on Intel, macOS in ARM). Lossless compressed raw files were already supported including wired and wireless tethering. : Capture One 22 (update 15.4.1) supports Nikon Z9 High Efficiency Raw (HE* and HE) lossy compressed raw file format. Most raw photo editors support Windows and macOS on Intel, and macOS on Apple’s ARM (M-series) processors including laptops, mac Studio, and iPhones and iPads. The reason many raw photo editors were holding off on delivering support for this new file format was that intoPIX only provided their SDK (software development kit) for Intel processors prior to Sept 2022. By comparison, a lossless compressed raw file delivers a full resolution image at an average of 55 to 60 MB per file. The HE* format delivers a full resolution raw file at about 33 MB per file, and the HE format delivers a full resolution raw file at about 22 MB per file. The Z9 includes two levels of high-efficiency (“HE”) output. This format provides significant compression with minimal loss of image quality.

You may be curious why many raw photo editors still do not have support for the new High Efficiency raw file format. LAST UPDATED: 25 October 2022: Adobe has released updates to Lightroom and Camera Raw with native ARM support for Nikon Z9 High Efficiency Raw (Tico-TAW) HE* and HE file formats.
